Te Anau is an attractive town that lies nestled on the south eastern edge of beautiful Lake Te Anau, with a spectacular backdrop of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison Mountains. Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and the second largest in NZ, andthe mountainson its western shore are covered by lush virgin forest. Te Anau is considered the 'gateway to fiordland'as it isthe closest town to Milford Sound, with a scenic 2½ hour drive, and is also the departure point for Doubtful Sound excursions and many of the legendary "Great Walks" multi-day hiking tracks.

The town is small and friendly, offers seven day a week shopping facilities with competitively priced goods, including high quality apparel, gift and souvenir shops. Local cafés and restaurants provide a variety of dining options, from fish and chips to fine dining, and the opportunity to sample local Fiordland fare of venison, lobster and other seafood.

A full range of services exists within the town including ATM facilities, two major banks, service stations (offering fuel and workshop facilities), rental cars, a pharmacy,medical centre and a dentist. There are two supermarkets, a large Freshchoice Supermarket and a smaller 4 Square grocery store.

Regular scheduled coach services link Fiordland to the West Coast, Queenstown, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.

Local residents (Fiordlanders) are passionate about and protective of the natural environment in the Fiordland National Park and love to share the natural beauty with visitors to this amazing World Heritage Area.

Check out the fantastic conservation project, Kids Restore The Kepler being lead by our local children and youth to restore birdsong to the Kepler area. The Kepler Mountains are directly across Lake Te Anau from the Te Anau Township and are home to beautiful forest, wildlife and the Kepler Track Great Walk.
